ABOUT DOT ART

The defining criterion for a dot painting is the technique used - that it is produced by repeated imprints of a paint covered brush, dotting stick or other implement onto the surface of the painting and that in doing so, there are recognisable 'dot' marks on the canvas.

You'll be surprised to learn that dot painting on canvas emerged in central Australia only in the early 1970s as a result of Aboriginal people working together with a white art school teacher, Geoffrey Bardon.

What do dots symbolize in art?

Dots symbolise stars, sparks, burnt ground etc. as the base of an Aboriginal painting is the organisation of the earth and the ancestral connection with it. In the last 30 years of the Western Desert movement, Johnny Warangkula was the first to use dotting in his paintings as a background.

HOW DO YOU DO DOT PAINTINGS?

If you search for ways to paint rocks you are bound to see lots of beautiful dotted mandala rocks. This style is very popular, but also a bit intimidating. When learning dot painting, I highly suggest doing a few less complicated dot style rocks before you tackle one of these.

But, first things first… what kind of supplies will you need?
